Welcome to Casa Pastel
Your Vacation Home on Isla Mujeres!

Amenities | Kitchen | Housekeeping | Water | Food Shopping | Laundry

We hope you enjoy your stay in your home-away-from-home on Isla Mujeres. Sit back and relax, take in the
tropical sunshine, see the blue-green waters of the Caribbean float by, and keep an eye out for dolphins!

We made some changes while we were closed. New pictures are coming soon. A bright, sea blue sectional sofa brings the Caribbean colors into the room. The kitchen is expanded. New sink and an air fryer/oven. It's user friendly and claims it can make yogurt! We're more the reheat last night's pizza crowd, but...

AMENITIES

We like to settle right in when we go on vacations. We expect you want the same thing. Your rental is set up so you'll find everything you need in your three level, 2 bedroom/2 bathroom suite. We'll even swing by the grocery to pick up your essentials so you can start to rest and relax as soon as you get here. There are restaurants with great food and amazing views within a few minutes walk of Casa Pastel. If you would rather just hang out and watch the Caribbean, almost every place offers delivery to your door.

• All rooms are fully "wired" for free wireless WiFi. There are portable blue tooth speakers, smart TVs and air conditioning. The speakers are waterproof and can be used on the beaches. Be aware that if they disappear while you are swimming they will need to be replaced. Also be aware that everyone at the beach doesn't necessarily have the same taste in music, so keep the volume neighbor friendly and let everyone enjoy their beach time.

Studio KitchenKITCHENS

The kitchens on both floors feature a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, water kettle, toaster, toaster oven, dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, and basic condiments. The studio on the third floor has a smaller kitchen with a studio fridge.

The second floor refrigerator has an ice maker that works and dispenses cold water. The air fryer, pretty simple to use and can create all sorts of fun foods, is in the second floor kitchen.

You'll also find a gas barbecue on the 2nd floor outside deck dining area.

If you stayed with us before, you'll be happy to hear that we made the kitchen space on the second floor bigger.

state of the art concrete waterfall edge sink counterThere is a handcrafted counter for the new double sink that makes cooking and clean up easier. The waterfall edge of the counter gave us a chance to play. We enjoy the Caribbean feel of the fish and shells playing in the "water."

We think the changes make the second floor more comfortable and modern, but the unique character of Casa Pastel is maintained. Let us know how you like the change. One thing we didn't change is the view. Yes, that blue you see from the kitchen windows is the Caribbean. Not the best views in the house, but nice.

HOUSEKEEPING

We provide a daily cleaning service so don't worry about bed making. That being said, we do expect our guests to respect the space and the staff. The woman who does the cleaning is a local friend who can be trusted to treat your possesions with care. NOTE: This being the tropics, bugs may want to wander in for a quick snack! Do a quick cleanup after meals to avoid inviting pesky ants. We keep open boxed cereal in the fridge for the same reason! All trash goes in the square receptacle in front of the house and to the right.

FOOD SHOPPING

Super Express is the closest supermarket in the La Gloria neighborhood. There is also a major shopping center, Chedraui, located further north. (see Map). By taxi, tell your driver "La Gloria Super" (LA-GLOR-DEE-AH SOOP-AIR) or "Chedraui" (CHED-RA-WEE). Make sure to say La Gloria Super. There is another one in the main square downtown. If you want that one, ask for SOOP-AIR CENTRO.

EGGS - You'll notice that eggs are not kept refrigerated in the stores. That is because they are fresh eggs. You won't need to refrigerate them. BUT if you do put them in the fridge, keep them there. Once they are refrigerated or washed, they will need to be kept cold.

MILK - Don't look for milk bottles or your refrigerated containers. The milk you see on the shelf in cardboard boxes is real milk. Entero is whole milk. Descremada is skimmed milk. Semicremada is 2%. Crema is sour cream. Media Crema is a thicker cream used to cool down very spicy foods. Works wonders on those really hot peppers! But don't be disappointed that it isn't half and half. Carnation is evaporated milk just like at home. If you are a half and half drinker, it might work for your morning brew. Finally, La Lechera is very sweet condensed milk. Don't confuse it with Carnation. Good luck!

Fresh tropical fruit FRESH FRUITS AND COCONUTS - are so healthy, right? And yes they are. But citrus fruits, coconuts, fresh tropical fruits, hot spices... all have the added benefit of being a mild laxitive. Keep in mind that all the yummy drinks are actually made with real fresh fruit juice. If you tend to be sensitive to that, pick up some of your usual OTC meds. You can ask at any Farmacia in Isla.

Another remedy is the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast all help. Naturally, if it seems out of the ordinary, check with a doctor.

LAUNDRY

We have a washer dryer at the house. You are here on vacation. If you want anything washed, put it in the mesh hamper and we will wash it, dry it, fold it, and return it to you the next day. The last day for laundry to be done before you leave is Friday. We use regular detergent. We line dry the wash out of respect for the environment (and we like the Caribbean way it smells). We do pop it in the dryer with a softener sheet for a few spins to soften and get the static out of the material.

Questions?

Finally, if you need additional water, have any special requests or need information, please let us know. We are conveniently located right downstairs. (Just text us or knock on the door!)

Concerned about drinking water? Bottled water is supplied. On the second floor the water is connected directly through the refrigerator. Your water and ice is not from the tap. That's true for most anywhere on Isla. The water you are served and the ice in your drinks are from bottled water.

We start you off with a garrafon of water on each floor when you arrive. Those are the big 5 gallon jugs. You are fine washing everything in tap water. All of our water runs through limestone and has a very "heavy" mineral content. We don't drink the tap water. But for everything else, from brushing your teeth to making pasta, it's fine. We don't use the tap water for coffee only because the lime deposits build up and ruin our coffee pots. If you need a second garrafon of water during your stay, it's included. Third and up we will ask you to provide. It's a small fee, $1.50 for each garrafon.
