Welcome to Isla Mujeres!

Ferry Terminal
The ferry terminal on Isla Mujeres is the entrance to the island from Cancun.

Getting Around | Golf Carts | Buses | Motor Bikes | Bikes | Hiking Isla
GOLF CARTS are the visitors' first choice for getting around the island.

Part of the charm of Isla is the ability to drive at a golf cart pace around the island. Just 5 miles (7km) long and 1/2 mile wide... at it's widest part, a slow ride enjoying the scenery will get you anywhere you want to go in no time at all. Rental companies are abundant in Centro (the downtown area near the ferry.) They all offer similar deals, usually starting at $65 per day per rental.

Golf cart It's recommended to go with a reputable company. We do have favorites, Apache and Ciro. Both located downtown. You can pick up your cart when you arrive or talk to them about bringing it to where you are staying. Apache will come to you to fill the gas tank if you need it. Ciro asks you to drive down for more gas. Both have good carts and are honest. You have to give them your driver's license as security while you have the rental. It's not a scam. That's how it's done.

A guy who offers a cheap deal may not be available if you break down or anything happens. The cart may not be in top shape. It may not be registered as a rental. Your call, but we recommend dealing with established businesses.

Call ahead to reserve if you plan on coming during high season, November through late May, or you may find no carts are available.

There is a ZERO blood alcohol tolerance strictly observed. if you don't have a designated driver, take a taxi or hire a driver to save yourself from aggravation. Locals use motos for transportation. A golf cart/moto encounter is tragic and not uncommon when the driver has had a beer or more. The police are serious about it. They are also serious about not letting kids take the wheel. The roads on the island are used by delivery trucks, cars, taxis, buses, motos, other golf carts, bikes and people walking. It may seem like Disneyland, but it's a town where 20,000 people live and tens of thousands more come to visit every day. If you wouldn't let you children drive your car at home, please don't let them drive on Isla. Please.

It's not difficult to get a driver to take the wheel for a nominal fee. There are several places within easy walking distance from Casa Pastel where you can hang out and eat great food with whatever adult beverages you want... and stroll back to the house.

BICYCLES, MOTORCYCLES and MOPEDS are also available for rent downtown at a far cheaper rate (usually about U$20 per day). If you are not used to riding motorized two wheelers, bear in mind that there are a lot of people on the road in golf carts who are enjoying the Isla vibe and may not be paying attention to driving... it's not a car. There are cars, trucks, and buses on the narrow roads. Be careful.

TAXIS from pass by the house most frequently in the morning.

At other times of day, you have a few options. You can make a left at the front gate and take the 15-minute walk to the La Gloria neighborhood (landmark: DeNuccio's Restaurant). You can walk up the side road and hang a left to Garrafon Park where there are usually lines of taxis waiting. Or you can call a taxi to come and get you, we have a couple of numbers of reliable taxistas.
If you prefer to have a taxi pick you up, remember that since taxis often come from the downtown area, a double fare usually applies.

BUSES Isla has tried to run buses off and on throughout the years. If you have been visiting Isla for decades, you have experienced or heard about the crazy schedules, constant breakdowns, and just not running anymore bus history on the island.

That's all ancient history. The taxi union now loves the buses. The locals depend on them. They run every half hour, like clockwork. Really! There are several routes that take you anywhere you want to go. Check the web site for details. Most people mask on the buses. It's just what the locals do and tourists usually follow to be polite. Not sure if it's "required", but if you see lots of masks, it's courteous.

ISLEÑOS BUS "The best way to visit Isla Mujeres. We take you to the best attractions at low costs! Pay once, travel all day! $10 MXN. Quintanarroenses. (Presentando identificación) $5 MXN. Estudiantes / 3ra Edad y PCD." Nonresident fare is $US 2.00 or $38 pesos. They also offer an all day, hop on - hop off fare that may be the best sightseeing bargain on the island! $US 9.00 or $175 pesos for an all day ride to anywhere on the island and back again! The web site gives details on all routes.

WALKING is great exercise, and Isla Mujeres is only five miles long! Personal Note: That said, we usually only make it halfway to downtown before giving up and hailing a taxi. Yes, it can get HOT out there.

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for taking an easy stroll. If you are venturing out during the heat of the day be sure to wear sun block, bring bottled water, and find an occasional shady spot to take a rest.
