GOLF CARTS are usually the first choice for getting around the island and seeing the sights on your visit to Isla Mujeres. Little ones seat four with the riders back to back. Bigger carts cost a bit more, but all four riders face forward. Then there is the rare one, the six seater! Nice for a family or group of six.

Part of the magical charm of Isla is the ability to drive at a leisurely golf cart pace around the perimeter road. You see the colors of the Caribbean and the local shops and homes. Just 5 miles (7km) long and 1/2 mile wide... at it's widest part, a fun ride enjoying the scenery will get you anywhere you want to go in no time at all. You can reserve a large or small 4 seater golf cart, or one of the rare six seaters, online when you book your trip. If you don't reserve ahead of time, you'll see booths on the Cancun side of the ferry where you can usually make arrangements for a rental. But, not to worry, rental companies are abundant in Centro, the downtown area on Isla Mujeres near the ferry. The golf cart rental companies all offer similar deals, usually starting at ~$65 per day per rental.

It's recommended to go with a reputable company. We do have favorites, both located downtown, but they are usually the first ones to rent out all their carts. In that case, any of the others will do. The prices are the same and for the most part, the difference is in the service. You can pick up your cart when you arrive or talk to the rental company about delivering it to where you are staying. Our favorite place to rent when family or friends are visiting is Indios. They will come to you to fill the gas tank if you need it and provide a few perks with the rental. If Indios is all booked, we go to Ciros. They ask you to drive to their garage if you need additional gas. Otherwise, both have good carts and are honest. Ciros rents six seaters. Indios does not. This isn't an ad. We really use these two almost exclusively unless they are sold out. Other locals may prefer other companies. They are all safe and have good reputations.

You have to give your driver's license as security while you have the rental no matter which company you choose. It's not a scam. That's how it's done.

A guy who offers a cheap deal may not be available if you break down or anything happens. The cart may not be in top shape. It may not be registered as a rental. Your call, but we recommend dealing with established businesses. Reserve well ahead of time if you plan on coming during high season, November through late May, or you may find no carts are available. If you want a six seater, they are rare. Not all golf cart rental companies have them. Don't take a chance they'll be already rented when you arrive! Reserve early and put a deposit down to lock in your reservation.

No matter which company you use, take the cart for a test drive around the block before you take off for your vacation home.

Check the lights to make sure both are working

Make sure you have the emergency contact number in your phone or written down somewhere you can find it in an emergency.

If you see something broken, make sure it's noted so you don't get the bill. Don't return a cart missing the back seat and try to convince them it was that way when you took it.

There is no gas gauge. Unscrew the cap and take a look at the gas level. Tiny engines don't use a lot of gas but if you do a lot of touring you may want to check.

Golf cart are not made for the racetrack. If you take a corner or a speed bump going too fast, you might tip and toss your passengers into the road. It's a fun toy, but travelling fast enough to do damage if you get careless.

There is a ZERO alcohol tolerance strictly observed. if you don't have a designated driver, take a taxi or hire a driver to save aggravation. A golf cart/moto encounter is tragic and not uncommon when the driver has had a beer or more. The police are serious about it. They are also serious about not letting kids take the wheel. The roads on the island are used by delivery trucks, cars, taxis, buses, motos, other golf carts, bikes and people walking. It may seem like Disneyland, but it's a town where 20,000 people live and tens of thousands more come to visit every day. If you wouldn't let you children drive your car at home, please don't let them drive on Isla. Please.

It's not difficult to hire a driver to take the wheel for a fee. Chances are there are several places within easy walking distance from where you are staying to hang out and eat great food with whatever adult beverages you want... and stroll back to the house. Save the golf cart for day touring.

There are two great golf cart guided touring companies on Isla Mujeres. Go Isla Tours and Isla Driver Robby Tours. Both get rave reviews from hundreds of happy customers. The drivers know the island and make the tours a real eye opener whether it's your first or ninety-first visit. All the drivers are bilingual English Spanish. If you want to do a pub crawl, that's the way to go.
